Background and Objectives: Soil quality degradation is a major challenge to sustainable land management. This study aimed to investigate the effects of biochar type, walnut shell (Wa) and pomegranate peel (Po), and pyrolysis temperature (400, 500, and 600°C) on soil quality. The hypothesis was that biochar type and pyrolysis temperature would independently and interactively affect soil quality.
Methods: The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with seven treatments and three replications at the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Lorestan University. The Nemrow Quality Index (NQI) and Integrated Quality Index (IQI) were calculated based on the Total Data Set (TDS) and Minimum Data Set (MDS).
Results: Increasing pyrolysis temperature significantly affected most soil properties (p<0.01). With increasing temperature, bulk density (BD) and percentage of aggregate destruction (PAD) decreased, whereas porosity, mean weight diameter (MWD), whole soil stability index (WSSI), and normalized stability index (NSI) increased. The highest MWD and WSSI were observed in Wa600, while the highest porosity and field capacity occurred in Po600. The highest organic carbon (OC) was recorded in Po600, whereas the highest phosphorus and potassium contents were obtained in Wa600. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC), particulate organic carbon (POC), urease, and alkaline phosphatase activities increased, while metabolic quotient (QCO₂) and acid phosphatase activity decreased (p<0.01). The highest IQI-TDS (0.722) was observed in Wa600, whereas the highest IQI-MDS (0.695) occurred in Po400.
Conclusion: Biochar, particularly at 600°C, improved soil quality. The superior performance of Wa600 in IQI-TDS and Po400 in IQI-MDS highlights the importance of selecting appropriate feedstock and pyrolysis temperature for improving soil quality.<span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">
