Background and Objective: Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses in arid and semi-arid regions and can have adverse effects on the growth and performance of ornamental plants. This stress is associated with reduced water uptake, ionic imbalance, and increased production of reactive oxygen species. In recent years, the use of plant extracts and bioactive compounds as biostimulants to enhance plant resistance against environmental stresses has gained considerable attention. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Moringa leaf extract on improving the morphological and physiological responses of African daisy (Dimorphotheca ecklonis) under salinity stress.
Methods: The experiment was carried out as a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with two factors: salinity levels (0, 150, and 300 mM sodium chloride) and foliar application of Moringa leaf extract (0, 15, and 20 mL L⁻¹), with three replications. Morphological traits including flowering time, number of flowers, flower diameter, plant height, root length, and fresh weight of shoots and roots were measured. After data collection, analysis of variance was performed to determine the main and interaction effects of the treatments.
Findings: The results showed that salinity caused a significant reduction in most growth traits; however, foliar application of Moringa leaf extract had a remarkable positive effect on improving plant traits under salinity conditions. The interaction between salinity and Moringa extract was significant for all measured traits, and treatments T3S2 and T2S2 (higher concentrations of Moringa extract under moderate salinity) exhibited the best performance, enhancing flowering time, flower number, flower diameter, root length, and fresh weight.
Conclusion: Overall, the findings indicated that Moringa leaf extract can substantially mitigate the negative effects of salinity stress in African daisy and can be recommended as an effective biostimulant for improving the growth of ornamental plants under saline conditions.
