Research history and purpose: Suitable concentrations of essential micronutrients Zinc (Zn) enhances plant growth and development. Phenylalanine amino acid is one of the growth stimulator with organic and aromatic base cause to increase plant growth and improve the production of aromatic compounds. The aim of this research was to investigate the interaction effect of phenylalanine and Zn element on growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigments and essential oil production of Tagete minuta under greenhouse condition.
Methods: A pot experiment was performed as factorial based on completely randomized design in soilless culture with four replications in research greenhouse in faculty agriculture of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran.The factors of the experiment included phenyl alanine (150 and 300 mg L-1) and control(distilled water) and Zn element (0, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 mg L-1) in Hoglant solution.
Results: The results of this study showed that the highest stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of aerial part and root, and the highest height, number of branches let, root length and volume were observed in 0.025 mg L-1 Zn and 0.05 mg L -1 with 150 mg L-1 phenyl alanine, respectively. The highest photosynthetic pigments were obtained in 0.1 mg L-1 Zn and 300 mg L-1 phenyl alanine. The highest essential oil production (7.01 g per pot) was obtained in 0.1 mg L-1 with 150 mgL-1 phenyl alanine which increased about 2.07 fold compared with control.
Conclusion: The results of this experiment showed that using the low and optimum concentrations of Zn cause to stimulate the growth and the highest concentration (0.1 mg L-1) cause to improve photosynthetic pigments and raising essential oil production of Mexican marigold.
