Background and Objective: Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) is one of the most important medicinal plants in the Asteraceae family, known for its numerous medicinal properties. Methanol, ethanol, and nitrogen play key roles in plant metabolism and structural functions, contributing to improved plant growth. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of foliar application of ethanol, methanol, and nitrogen on the growth and quality of tarragon.
Methods: This experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three replications under greenhouse conditions. Treatments included ethanol and methanol at concentrations of 10, 20 and 30%, nitrogen at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 mM, and a control (distilled water). Foliar application was performed every two days over a period of two weeks. Sampling, physiological traits and enzyme activity evaluations were conducted approximately 10 days after the final foliar application (plant height 25 cm).
Results: The results showed that the highest fresh and dry weights of aerial parts (i.e., 17.35 g and 6.75 g per plant), proline content (4.64 mg g‒1 FW), protein content (57.03 µg mg‒1 FW), and concentrations of iron, potassium, magnesium, and nitrogen (16.54, 189.35, 5.62, and 35.42 mg g‒1 DW) were obtained in the 3 mM nitrogen treatment. The highest total chlorophyll content (13.92 mg g‒1 FW), vitamin C content (17.85 mg 100g‒1 FW), and the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzymes (7.42 and 14.78 enzyme units g‒1 FW) were observed in the 30% methanol treatment.
Conclusion: Foliar application of ethanol, methanol, and nitrogen had positive effects on the growth and biochemical characteristics of tarragon. In particular, foliar application of 3 mM nitrogen and 30% methanol can serve as an effective approach to enhance the growth and quality of tarragon.
